Cardus Work & Economics

Cardus Work and Economics promotes a view of the economy situated in a larger social context with individual human beings at the centre.

Our research focuses on the following propositions:

  • Governments, markets, and individuals each have a role in the economy and a sphere for which they are responsible. These roles are governed in part by the principle of subsidiarity.
  • The economy is one among many institutions that support our social architecture. A proper understanding of the economy must look at it in the context of other institutions, such as the family and civil society.
  • Human persons have dignity that must be safeguarded in economic markets. This includes the dignity of work. Access to the labour market should be promoted, particularly for the most disadvantaged among us.
  • Government policies should promote competition and freedom of association, including in labour and construction markets.
